London Design Biennale 2023

Somerset House, London

We have been lucky enough to be a preferred supplier to The London Design Biennale at Somerset House for six years now. Each year the biennale has grown and 2023 did not disappoint. With commissions from; Dubai, Taiwan, Automorph, South Korea and Turkey plus crew support for the wider build Creator had a very busy Spring!

First prize winners for Design, Taiwan, asked us to fabricate their metal shop to the highest specifications using a variety of metal parts to seamlessly join their kinetic and light sculptures. (See below for kinetic video.)

First-prize winners of Public’s Choice, Turkey, used our installation and management services to bring the immense outdoor piece Openwork to life. With five different types of plant machinery including cranes, this was a mammoth build with spectacular results. (See above for video.)

Our personal favourite build has to be Dubai. With only weeks remaining until the doors opened we were tasked with creating an enormous two-room sand dune. Our crack team of prop makers, scenic artists and quick-learning carpenters crafted this beauty out of a lorry load of block polystyrene and sand. To say we are proud of their achievements would be an understatement.

All held together at the helm by the incredible Project Manager Laura, who has earned herself a lie down.

Taiwan

“Through the creation of a ‘Visual Shop’, the Taiwan pavilion celebrates the country’s unique economy of small and medium-sized enterprises, which are full of vitality, movement and creativity. Including a metal supply area and ‘workshop,’ the installation showcases the collaborative nature of industries in Taiwan which are all individual and depict the diversity of the location.”

It all begins with an idea…

How many scenic artists does it take to build and install a room full of sand dunes? Around ten apparently…
